1906 STUDEBAKER
Touring Car 4 cyl. 30 h.p. ModelG Price new: ,700
When the Studebaker companynow the oldest vehicle manufacturer in the
countryadded new electric carriages to their line of wagons in 1902, they were
doing it only as a side line. Wagon-building was too profitable to switch entirely
to the tricky business of manufacturing automobiles. Soon, in 1904, Studebaker
began distributing gasoline cars, using the widespread network of salesmen they
had developed for their wagons. Studebakers reputation rested on its flawless
construction and superb finishing. The Model G, pictured here, was a very hand-
some car, sporting more brass (not chrome) than most of its contemporaries. Each
lamp was engraved with Studebaker, and large bronze identification plates were
placed on both sides of the frame. The engine was conventionally designed with
cylinders cast in pairs.
