When the new Model 810 Cord, pictured here, was introduced at the New York
Automobile Show in November, 1935, it was voted the best-looking car in the exhibi-
tion. What the public did not realize was with what economy and speed the series
had been made ready. Only one million dollars and four and a half months were left
for design and tooling from the day the design was accepted to the day of the show.
For Gordon Buehrig, the designer, this rush was partly beneficial. With so little time,
the company was forced to settle for a car with simple lines, uncluttered by elaborate
shapings and chrome decorations. Tlie distinctive feature of the Cord was its front-
wheel drive, a technique that had limited, previous use. This model was the grand-
father of the convertible as we know it, with such advanced features as a top which
disappeared completely into a metal-covered well.
