    Description

    DETAILS:
Original pinback button issued by the Black Panther Party. Circa 1968. Measures 1 1/2" inches. Has photo of Eldrige Cleaver (Minister of Information) with the words "It's Time To Intensify the Struggle".
    BACKGROUND:
In the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, there were riots across the nation. On April 6, Eldridge Cleaver and 14 other Panthers was involved in a confrontation with Oakland police officers, during which two officers were wounded. Cleaver was wounded during the ambush and 17-year-old Black Panther member Little Bobby Hutton was killed. They were armed with M16 rifles and shotguns. Cleaver was charged with the murder but after a great deal of effort was able to be released on bail while awaiting trial. He fled Havana, Cuba shortly after being released. He eventually ended up in Algeria with fellow political prisoner Timothy Hutton as they both tried to flee from the long reach of the US Federal Government. Pinback button measures 1 3/4" inches. Rare.
