Huey P. Newton
(1942-1989) was a co-founder of the Black Panther Party (BPP) in 1966. Newton had been greatly influenced by Malcolm X, and the BPP was strongly involved in the Black Power movement throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Newton ran for Congress in 1968 on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket, which was founded in 1967 in response to opposition to the Vietnam War.
