This Pin was issued and sold in 1986 to raise funds and support for an Anarchist Gathering to be held in Chicago, Ill. on May 1 (May Day) through May 4, 1986. May 4 was the 100 year anniversary of the Haymarket " Riot " or Affair of 1886.
The pin colors are black and gold, the symbolic colors adopted by Anarchists around the world.

In the 20th Century, Anarchists
did not organize any sort of multi-tendency, national or continental gatherings in the US or Canada until
1986
, the
100th anniversary of the Haymarket Affair of Chicago, on May 4, 1886. In
1889
, the
International Socialist Conference
declared that, in commemoration of the Haymarket affair,
May 1
would be celebrated as
International Workers Day.
Accordingly, the
Anarchist Gathering commenced on May 1
and
concluded on May 4.
The
Anarchist Gathering of 1986
was large and inclusive, combining skill building workshops, information sharing sessions on various campaigns, networking activities, a protest, cultural events, and the exchange of books, art and other materials.This model of a ‘
continental gathering
’ occurred again in 1987, 1988 and 1989.
The events of
Haymarket
had been a high point of 19th century anarchism, when
anarchists organized thousands for the eight hour work day, and worker power
, but were faced
police brutality that killed workers
. The anarchist leaders were
blamed for an explosion that killed seven police officers
and at least four civilians.
Eight anarchists were convicted of conspiracy, and four were hanged
,
one committed suicide
in prison.
The Haymarket affair
(also known as the Haymarket massacre, the Haymarket riot, or the Haymarket Square riot) was the aftermath of a bombing that took place at a labor demonstration on
May 4, 1886, at Haymarket Square in Chicago, Illinois
. It began as a peaceful rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour work day, the day after police killed one and injured several workers. An unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at the police as they acted to disperse the meeting, and the bomb blast and ensuing gunfire resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and at least four civilians; dozens of others were wounded.
In the internationally publicized legal proceedings that followed, eight anarchists were convicted of conspiracy. The evidence was that one of the defendants may have built the bomb, but none of those on trial had thrown it.[4][5][6][7] Seven were sentenced to death and one to a term of 15 years in prison. Illinois Governor Richard J. Oglesby commuted two of the sentences to terms of life in prison; another committed suicide in jail rather than face the gallows. The other four were hanged on November 11, 1887. In 1893, Illinois Governor John Peter Altgeld pardoned the remaining defendants and criticized the trial.[8]
The
Haymarket Affair
is generally considered significant as
the origin of International Workers' Day held on May 1
, and it was also the climax of the social unrest among the working class in America known as the Great Upheaval. According to labor historian William J. Adelman: "
No single event has influenced the history of labor in Illinois, the United States, and even the world, more than the Chicago Haymarket Affair. It began with a rally on May 4, 1886, but the consequences are still being felt today. Although the rally is included in American history textbooks, very few present the event accurately or point out its significance."
In
1889

International Socialist Conference
declared that, in commemoration of the Haymarket affair,
May 1
would be
an international holiday for labor,
now known in many places as
International Workers’ Day,
and
in the U.S. and May Day
.

led by Earnest “Chilly Willy” Thomas and Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick founded the group known as The Deacons for Defense and Justice to protect members of the
Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
against Ku Klux Klan violence. Most of the “Deacons” were veterans of
World War II
and the
Korean War
. The Jonesboro chapter organized its first affiliate chapter in nearby Bogalusa, Louisiana led by Charles Sims, A.Z. Young and Robert Hicks. Eventually they organized a third chapter in Louisiana. The Deacons tense confrontation with the Klan in Bogalusa was crucial in forcing the federal government to intervene on behalf of the local African American community. The national attention they garnered also persuaded state and national officials to initiate efforts to neutralize the Klan in that area of the Deep South.
The Deacons emerged as one of the first visible self-defense forces in the South and as such represented a new face of the
civil rights
movement. Traditional civil rights organizations remained silent on them or repudiated their activities. They were effective however in providing protection for local African Americans who sought to register to vote and for white and black civil rights workers in the area. The Deacons, for example, provided security for the 1966 March Against Fear from Memphis to Jackson,
Mississippi
. Moreover their presence in Southeastern Louisiana meant that the Klan would no longer be able to intimidate and terrorize local African Americans without challenge.
