Original pinback button issued for the 1966 Democratic Congressional primary run of Mel Dubin. Measures 1 1/4" inches.
BACKGROUND:
During the 1960s Brooklyn was represented by Democrat Abe Multer. He was a fiercely partisan party boss who headed the "Democratic Machine" in the borough. Multer was a staunch Lyndon Johnson war hawk who was in favor of continuing the war in Vietnam. Dubin was a progressive dove and decided to try to unseat the Congressman in the Democratic primary. He was given little chance of success by the press of unseating such a prominent party boss. Many called it a David versus Goliath match. Dubin however was not dissuaded. On election night he surprised everyone when he came within 12 votes of unseating the head of the Brooklyn Machine.
