‘COLGATE’S MECHANICS SOAP PASTE’ VINTAGE 1920s TIN ~ COOL ~ DISPLAYS GREAT!This week on EBay we are offering this very nice looking vintage tin for Colgate’s Mechanics Soap.
It looks terrific, has great colors and displays wonderfully.
The lid features a young man working on his vintage 1920’s era automobile and a young lady, in full 20s dress, washing her hands.
The front has a nice green and cream colored graphics. There are 3 panels around the can, one promotes the product in big bold letters, one tells directions for use, one tells its many uses such as drivers of Automobiles, Typists, Housewives, Mothers, and even tells how to clean young boy’s knees after playing.
A great vintage label with great vintage advertising copy.
The cream color with greenish-black lettering looks terrific.
The soap is made by ‘Colgate and Company’ in New York. It says “No. 1” and “10 ozs” on the label.
I’m not sure of the exact date of this old tin. The couple on the lid scream 1920s but it may be earlier.
Colgate moved their headquarters from New York to Jersey City in 1910. Colgate-Palmolive was formed in 1928, so this tin may be from the late teens or early 1920s. It’s clearly made in New York and there is no mention of Palmolive. So, late teens, early 20s may be a more accurate date. I’ve seen this listed as 1918, and that might be accurate. Anyway, it’s old and cool. A rare survivor.
Its size is 3.5” diameter and 2” tall.
The lid has writing around the rim including “Is Kind to the Skin,” The lid is snug but comes off easily. The tin is empty and clean inside, no soap or oiliness. Condition is great.
The tin has typical age-related wear but no rust. The bottom is solid. The lid has some wear but still looks great.
This would look terrific in a collection of old oil cans, spark plugs or any collection of vintage automobilia.
It would also look great in a collection of old tools. It displays great and would look cool just by itself in your man-cave.
A terrific old Mechanics Soap tin. You’ll love it!!
