Transcendental Students and the NYU ROTC Expulsions
    - In 1969 New York University President, James Hester announced that he had approved the Nixon administrations wishes to set up an ROTC recruitment center on campus along with other activities to help the US in its war in Vietnam. The student body was outraged and soon after the Transcendental Students (TS) took charge organizing demonstration, sit-ins and other forms of civil disobedience. In a show of defiance several hundred NYU students lead by TS leadership broke into the ROTC campus offices and trashed them. Hester was incensed that his authority would be challenged so openly. He soon began an investigation to identify TS who had organized the break-in and expel them. Eleven students were accused and promptly expelled. This only further infuriated the progressives on campus and TS ranks soon swelled. In March 1969, the TS organized the first of their notorious Freak-Ins in support of the expelled 11 students. According to the Washington Square Journal, the school administration was completely unable to deal with this new form of protest. Soon afterwords administrators reversed the expulsions and gave in to several of the TS demands including abolishing the ROTC campus office. In the end, it was Hester who had backed down and not the students.
