Description
Very early soap box racer. This one is an original barn find near La Honda, Ca. Its roots are steeped in Redwood City history. The sponsor, Holmquist Hardware Store, has been long defunct and the old brick building (1895) has historical significance and is located at 114 Stambaugh St. in Redwood City. The driver, LeRoy Harbaugh, still has family in Redwood City. The Chev bowtie that is stenciled on both sides (Davies Special) represents a defunct Chevrolet dealership that was located at the corner of Jefferson and El Camino Real in Redwood City. In fact, I bought my first new car from E-Z Davies Chevrolet in 1964 (Chev Impala Super Sport) and paid a staggering ,700. Included with the racer is the helmet, 4 heat winner tags (1941), ticket from the 1941 National & International finals in Akron, Ohio & 2 token / medallions. Also included is a vintage SHELL OIL COMPANY lubricant for SOAP BOX DERBY. The steel wheels are of an early style as they have rivets around the entire outer circumference. SIZE: Approx. 80+ inches in length. Front wheels track at approx. 30+ inches. This racer has signs of wear and tear and authentic use during many, many competitions, in the San Francisco Bay area and beyond. The graphics are awesome. Eary style steel wheels (riveted). The bobtail shape is "off the chart". Detailed wood strip construction. Does have steering wheel and wood drag brake. Some cables present but they appear to be disconnected. Yes, it is rolling stock but I would not put it into use. It is a museum piece! This one deserves to land at a destination where it can be admired and displayed. I just do not have the space to stage it properly. Trfuly a fine relic representing this enduring sport - Soap Box Racing / Competition
